"I have studied the child, I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it, and that is what is called the Montessori Method."

"Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment." Dr. Maria Montessori

Elements of the Prepared Environment

  • Beautiful-- The environment is well maintained and the materials call out to the children inviting them not only to touch but to explore.

  • Child-Sized-- The furniture, utensils, and materials are meant for small bodies and hands allowing the child independence.

  • Consistency--Ideally the child will stay in the environment for three years allowing the child to have a consistent relationship not only with the environment but also with their guide and peers.

  • Opportunities for independence-- The environment is arranged and designed in such a way that children can gain functional independence and expand their skills in caring for themselves and others.

  • Opportunities for Movement-- Children are granted the freedom to move around as necessary. They may work at a table. They may work on a rug, but the children get to decide! Movement is also built into many of the materials as we ask children to carry each piece one at a time to their workspace.

  • Mixed Age Groups-- mixed age groups is a key component to a Montessori environment. it allows fo the children to work together. Younger children rely on older children and older children get to practice being leaders and helpers.

  • Following the Child-- Children learn best when they are met with what interests them. Montessori's foundations are built in observation and in following the child. This means following the child's natural development and interests and supporting accordingly.
